Rolling out a data loss prevention platform at enterprise scale is one of those projects that looks deceptively clean on a Gantt chart. Stakeholders nod at the timeline. The vendor rep assures you that onboarding is "straightforward." Then week two arrives and you're knee-deep in a ticket storm wondering why your CAD application is treating every file save like a hostage situation.
This post is the writeup I wish I'd had before kicking off our DLP migration. Consider it field notes from the trenches — not marketing material, not vendor docs, but a practical account of what actually happens when you roll this stuff into a real, heterogeneous enterprise environment.
Why DLP (and Why Now)
Modern organizations bleed data from a hundred different vectors. Email. USB drives. Cloud sync. Browser uploads. Screen captures. The threat model has never been more complex, and compliance expectations haven't gotten any friendlier. DLP isn't optional anymore — it's table stakes.
The challenge is that most DLP deployments treat the problem as primarily technical. Deploy agent. Write policy. Done. What they don't prepare you for is the organizational friction — the power users who suddenly can't do their jobs, the application teams who never got the memo, and the help desk queue that appears from nowhere.

Here's the thing nobody puts in the datasheet: DLP agents sit at a very low level in the operating system stack. They intercept file I/O, monitor process behavior, and hook into browser extensions. When you have specialized software that also operates at that level, conflicts happen.
Some specific pain points we hit:
- Nasuni Filers — CPU consumption spiked dramatically when the agent was scanning high-frequency sync operations. Required working with the vendor on allowlist configurations.
- AutoCAD .dwg files — The agent's file inspection was interfering with AutoCAD's file locking mechanism, causing saves to fail mid-operation. Architects were not happy.
- GIS Applications — Complex file formats that don't follow standard MIME types confused the policy engine. Took significant tuning to distinguish legitimate exports from potential exfiltration.
Lesson: Build an application inventory before you start. Every specialized app is a potential conflict. Get your CAD, GIS, and engineering teams to pilot early — not after you've pushed to production.
Policy Architecture Matters More Than You Think
Your first instinct will be to write broad policies that catch everything. Resist that instinct. Overly aggressive policies generate alert fatigue and false positives that erode trust in the platform.

The phased approach isn't just about technical risk — it's about organizational buy-in. People accept enforcement more readily when they've seen the monitoring phase and understand what the policy is actually catching.
The Honest Lessons
After the dust settled, here's what I'd tell anyone starting a DLP deployment today:
- Get vendor support SLAs in writing before you go to production. You will need them.
- Build your change management plan before you touch a single endpoint.
- Test with your heaviest users first — not the most compliant ones.
- Define success metrics that your business stakeholders actually care about, not just technical indicators.
- Have a rollback plan. You won't use it, but having it will let you sleep.
